Praia Grande - Indians Tupi-Guarani named the place Peabuçu, which means long beach, with such an extense sea. The current lands belonging to Praia Grande once belonged to the Captaincy of São Vicente, which, later, became a Province of São Paulo and, centuries later, to the State of São Paulo. Political emancipation did not happen suddenly, nor was the will of one person only: there was much resistance from São Vicente because it meant the loss of 24 km of beaches. Emancipation has only happened in 1967.
