Iporanga - Name of Tupi origin, which means beautiful river water, referring to Iporanga creek, a tributary of the Ribeira de Iguape. The earliest evidence of colonial occupation in the year 1576 brought the first economic crops, the cane sugar and cereals. In the seventeenth century, the exploitation of gold at Serras do Ribeira was being monitored and gradually replaced by an incipient cultivation of rice and cassava. In the late eighteenth century, the population moved to the confluence of Iporanga with Ribeira do Iguape, dedicating to subsistence farming, mainly sugar cane and rice.
